TBS Chat Channel Help

Running the Applet:

The TBS chat channel uses a java applet, and requires java 2.0 or higher to be installed. If you require this, it can be found at www.java.com/getjava. When you run the applet the first time you will need to give it a security clearance. You will see a window similar to this:

Make sure the publisher is listed as "Tau Beta Sigma" then click OK. If you do not want to see this window when you return check the "Always Trust..." area and it will automatically be trusted from then on.

First time logon:

The first time you use the chat room, you’ll want to register a name for yourself. By default you will have the name "TBSGuest" followed by some number assigned to you for the time being. Up in the top left you will see a box labeled "Enter Nick:" with your guest name in it. Change this to the name you want and press Enter. Then in the upper right press the button labeled "Nickserv." Type in a password that you will remember and is hard for other people to guess, then press "register" to register your name. Once it is registered press "identify" then "ok" to use that name and press the "#tbs" tab at the bottom to switch back to the chat channel. Note: registered nicknames must be logged into once every 30 days for them to remain active.

Using your name:

Once your name is registered, every time you log in to the chat room you will need to identify yourself to use that name. Type the name you chose before in the upper left and press Enter. Then press the "Nickserv" button at the top-right, enter your password, and press "identify." Press ok to close the dialog, then the "#tbs" tab at the bottom to switch your view to the chat channel.

IRC Info:

The Java applet on the website is set up to automatically connect to the chat room, though if you’d rather use your favorite IRC client, connect to the server "irc.newnet.net" and join the channel "#tbs".
